Deliberate targeting of civilians is a war crime, Norway’s Jens Stoltenberg stressed.
The rocket attacks and drone attacks being carried out by Russia against Ukraine are a war crime and a terrorist attack. This was said by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on June 1 before the start of an informal meeting of foreign ministers of the alliance countries in Oslo, reports Ukrinform.
“Deliberately attacking civilians is a war crime. There are parallels between what we saw here in Norway on July 22, 2011 (Anders Breivik’s attacks, with a large number of victims) and an aggressive war against the sovereign independent state of Ukraine. The intentions are the same – to use criminal force to achieve political goals,” he stressed.
According to Stoltenberg, it is very important to hold perpetrators of war crimes accountable so that the International Criminal Court can conduct the necessary investigation, establish facts and gather evidence.
Answering the media’s question about possible attacks on Russian territory, the Secretary General stressed that NATO is still not a party to the conflict, and that Ukraine has the right to defend itself.
“We are now in exactly the same position as at the beginning of the war – Ukraine has the right to defend itself. Russia’s aggressive war against Ukraine is a gross violation of international law. The right to self-defense is spelled out in the UN Charter … Moscow against Ukraine. Ukraine has the right to defend itself,” the Secretary General said.
It will be remembered that on Thursday an informal meeting of foreign ministers of allied countries will be held in the capital of Norway, its main purpose is to prepare for the July NATO summit in Vilnius.
