The current leader of the Republic of Latvia, Egils Levits, has decided not to run for a second term.
The Saeima of Latvia has elected Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics as the country’s new president. This was announced by the Latvian Parliament on Wednesday, May 31.
It was noted that in the third round of elections Rinkevics’s candidacy was supported by 52 deputies, against – 35 votes.
“It is a great honor for me to be elected President of the Republic of Latvia, I will do my best to serve the people of Latvia well. Thank you to the representatives for their trust,” Rinkevics wrote in Twitter.
Also, two more candidates claimed the position of head of state – Uldis Pilens (Joint List) and Elina Pinto (Progressive). According to the results of the two rounds, Pinto went down in further struggle.
It is known that the current President of Latvia, Egils Levits, has decided not to run for a second term. He also urged Pilens to refuse to participate in the elections to enable the current coalition to agree on a presidential candidate in the interest of the state.
Recall that in March, Egil Levits arrived in Lviv, where he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. He also called for an early tribunal in Russia.
