Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, the monument to Pushkin has repeatedly become the object of political discussions in Latvia. He was doused with paint and called a symbol of Russian imperialism. Subsequently, a petition was filed for the demolition of the monument, which received 1,600 signatures. At the same time, the pro-Russian population was against de-Russification and carried flowers to the monument.
In March 2023, the Council for Monuments of the Riga City Council recommended moving the statue of Pushkin, since it was established that its installation was carried out illegally, because neither the Council for the Preservation and Development of the Riga Historical Center, nor the State Inspectorate for the Protection of Cultural Monuments agreed at the time.
The Riga City Council expressed support for the transfer of the monument to Pushkin.
