The world must adhere to the principles of the UN Charter and the right of the people of Ukraine to be masters of their own future, stressed Ursula von der Leyen.
Proposals to start negotiations after the end of Russia’s war against Ukraine must take into account the need for a complete withdrawal of Russian troops from its territory, otherwise the conflict will freeze . This is what the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen said in a speech at the GLOBSEC 2023 security forum, according to the EC website on Wednesday, May 31.
“Today there is a lot of talk about peace plans and a cease-fire. First of all, there must be a principle: nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine. Together with Ukraine, we want a just peace, one that will not be rewarded for the aggressor, but will follow the principles of the UN Charter and the right of the people of Ukraine to be masters of their own future,” said the President of the European Commission.
According to him, the ceasefire, which will lead to the freezing of the conflict, will not bring lasting peace.
“While the ceasefire took place in 2014, we know what happened to that agreement in February when Russia invaded. The ceasefire is inherently unstable and could break the region along the line of confrontation. No one will invest or will rebuild , and the conflict can break out again at any moment. No, a just peace must be the result of the withdrawal of Russian troops and their equipment from the territory of Ukraine,” insisted Ursula von der Leyen.
The head of the European Commission called on “all possible” to provide Ukraine with artillery and long-range weapons.
“The urgent need is military aid to support the efforts of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. That is why we proposed the law on the production of ammunition – we call it ASAP. We want to push our defense industry to increase production of the necessary 155mm and 152mm artillery shells. And those that can provide long-range artillery mounts and weapon systems that will help Ukraine close the gap in the ranks of the attacking forces on the battlefield,” said von der Leyen.
He also emphasized that support is also needed for the combat training of the Ukrainian army.
“Member states are doing a lot, and we, at the European level, are also doing our part. By the end of the year, we will train 30,000 servicemen and women in the military,” added the head of the European Commission.
Remember, on May 9, UN Secretary General António Guterres said that peace talks between the Russian Federation and Ukraine are still impossible, and the reason for this is that now “both sides are convinced that they can win.”
In this regard, the Office of the President called the conditions for peace in Ukraine.
