Payments were resumed to 277 servicemen of the 501st battalion of marines who defended Mariupol and were captured by the Russians, and their families. This happened after the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) closed the proceedings on their desertion.

Earlier, the State Bureau reported suspicion of treason to the deputy battalion commander Konstantin Bessmertny, because of which 277 soldiers were taken prisoner. According to the investigation, Bessmertny went over to the side of the enemy, persuading the commander to surrender. The military was ordered to relocate, but in fact they were transferred to the DPR. They didn’t know it.
Since the end of February 2022, the battalion has been defending Mariupol. In April 2023, Rospropagandists spread information that the marines of the 501st battalion voluntarily surrendered in the encircled Mariupol.
Investigators of the DBR established the fact of treason to the head of the clothing service of the rear of 501 OBMP.
In May 2023, the DBR launched a pre-trial investigation against the battalion servicemen. In the same month, the DBR decided to close the production of captured marines 501 OBMP. This decision gave grounds to the authorized bodies to restore the violated rights of captured marines to pay their relatives.
The head of the real service of the rear of the 501st OBMP of the Naval Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine was notified of suspicion of high treason (part 2 of article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). The sanction of the article provides for life imprisonment.
The pre-trial investigation in criminal proceedings continues, a full circle of persons who may be involved in the crime is being established.
