Erdogan’s victory speech in Ankara was quoted by the state agency Anadolu.
We respect the will of the voters, as we did in all previous elections. We weren’t the only ones who won. Turkey won, democracy won! In the elections on May 28 – there were no losers, all 85 million people of Turkey won. It is time for unity and rallying in the name of national goals and ideas,” Erdogan said.
Erdogan’s rival Kemal Kilicdaroglu, Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader and National Alliance presidential candidate, won 47.84% of the vote when 99.85% of the ballot boxes were opened. This indicates a deep split in Turkish society.
Erdogan said that inflation is Turkey’s most urgent problem.
These elections were considered one of the most significant for Turkey, since the opposition hoped to overthrow Erdogan and change his policy, pursued since 2003.
The key issues in this election were soaring inflation and the cost of living, as well as the consequences of devastating earthquakes that claimed more than 50,000 lives.
