The Verkhovna Rada proposes to officially use in Ukraine the historical name of Georgia – Sakartvelo.
The Verkhovna Rada registered a draft resolution on the use in Ukraine of the historical name of Georgia Sakartvelo. Document card number 9329 appeared on Parliament’s website.
The explanatory note states that Tbilisi has been convincing international partners for 15 years to abandon the name Georgia, which is considered Russified, especially the name – Russian.
Georgians demand to use the historical name of their country – Sakartvelo.
“The name Georgia is used in the world by about 20 countries, including Ukraine. Most of these countries are countries in the post-Soviet space or those that experienced significant Soviet influence. This state is called Georgia in Russia, Georgia is an imperial name, and also the translation of Georgia is the result of a translation from Russian,” the explanatory note says.
The initiators of the resolution explained that several countries, including South Korea, Lithuania, Israel and Japan, have abandoned the name Georgia in official documents.
“Ukraine’s relations with Georgia are deep and multifaceted, but one of the steps for further rapprochement on the part of Ukraine may be the official use of the historical name of Georgia – Sakartvelo,” added the initiators of the resolution.
In addition, the draft resolution proposes to call the Georgian people (Georgians) Kartvels.
It was previously reported that the Georgian government this year refused to install EU flags on the parliament building for the country’s Independence Day.
