Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama said the Pasha Liman maritime base, located 180 kilometers south of Tirana, could be an “added value” for the Alliance.
“In these dangerous times, I believe one might consider placing a NATO naval base in Albania,” Rama said.
The Pasha-Liman base, located near the city of Vlora, was built in the 1950s. The USSR delivered 12 submarines there, making it the only Soviet naval base in the Mediterranean. After the severance of ties between Tirana and Moscow in 1961, Pasha Liman remained a naval base, where four submarines and several small ships were stationed.
The base was looted in 1997. Three of the submarines were sold for scrap, while a fourth remained and the government is considering turning it into a museum.
Recall that Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin ruled on placing permanent NATO bases or nuclear weapons on her country’s territory after her entry into the Alliance.
