Brezhnev was the first to receive it. This happened after the General Secretary opened a memorial to the Motherland in Kyiv.
On the eve of the second Kyiv Day during the full-scale war, traditionally celebrated annually on the last Sunday of May, the deputies of the capital decided to revise the list of those who have the title of honorary citizen of the city.
First, the agenda of the meeting of the Kyiv City Council featured the abolition of such a title only for the Secretary General of the Central Committee of the CPSU Leonid Brezhnev.
However, the consideration was postponed to May 25. Because, as explained by the deputy mayor, secretary of the Kyiv City Council Volodymyr Bondarenko, a number of representatives of the Soviet nomenclature fall under the criteria for depriving the title of “Honorary Citizen of the City of Kyiv”.
76 deputies out of 93 present voted for consideration of this decision. On Thursday, May 25, this issue was considered at the plenary meeting of the city council.
