Moscow announced the expulsion of five Swedish diplomats in response to Stockholm’s “confrontational actions.” This was reported on May 25 in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia.
It was mentioned that on Thursday, the Swedish Ambassador in Moscow, Malena Mard, was summoned to the Foreign Ministry and informed about the declaration of persona non grata of five Swedish diplomats, including three employees of the defense attache at the embassy in Moscow.
The Russian ministry noted that on April 25, Stockholm “took an openly hostile step” by declaring five employees of Russian foreign agencies in Sweden as persona non grata.
Swedish diplomats were ordered to leave the Russian Federation within the same time frame set by the Swedish authorities for the departure of Russian employees.
In addition, from September 1, the Russian Federation withdrew its consent to the operation of the Swedish Consulate General in St. Petersburg and from that day stopped the work of the Russian Consulate General in Gothenburg.
Recall that on April 25, Stockholm decided to expel five Russian diplomats. Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Bilström stated that their activities are not compatible with the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
