The Russian army failed to surround Bakhmut in the Donetsk region – part of the dominant height around the city was lost. This was announced on May 21 by Deputy Defense Minister Anna Malyar.

The Deputy Defense Minister added that the Armed Forces of Ukraine maintain control over industrial and infrastructure facilities and the private sector in the Samolet area.
The spokesman of the Eastern Group of Forces, Serhiy Cherevaty, in a comment to Suspіlny, confirmed that the Ukrainian military managed to hold positions outside the city.
“The enemy is destroyed every day by massive artillery and air strikes, and our units report that the situation is very difficult. Our military maintains fortifications and some areas in the southwestern part of the city . There are heavy battles,” he said.
Despite the fact that Bakhmut was completely destroyed, Russia attaches great symbolic importance to it.
“Russia focused on this Bakhmut, as if they took the Dnieper. In fact, they did not take it to the end. The city was destroyed, it does not bring them any military or even political benefit. They did not take the regional center in nine months. We are trying to put pressure on the edges, haunt them and, if possible, counterattack,” the spokesman emphasized.
It was previously reported that Bakhmut remains a priority target for the Russians. In addition to the Wagner grouping, the enemy is concentrating airborne and motorized rifle units there.
