The number of people who believe that Russia might attack Kazakhstan has increased from 8.3% to 15%.
The number of Kazakhs who believe Russia might attack their country has doubled in the past six months. This was confirmed by the results of a survey conducted by the Bureau of express monitoring of public opinion Demoscope together with the research center PaperLab.
As of May 2023, 21% of Kazakhs support Ukraine, 12.8% of respondents sympathized with Russia. 59.8% of the citizens of Kazakhstan are neutral on the issue of Russia’s war against Ukraine.
These data correspond to the figures of a similar survey in December last year.
However, the number of people who believed that Russia might attack Kazakhstan rose from 8.3% in the initial survey to 15%.
About one-third of respondents said their perception of Russia had worsened because of the war, more than half said it had not changed, and only 4.7% said it had improved.
In general, the events in Ukraine are of interest to 70% of Kazakhs, only 24% say that they are not worried about the geopolitical situation that has developed as a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
As for winning the war, 10% of Kazakhs believe that Russia will win, 8.9% believe in Ukraine. 54% of respondents said they want a “compromise” on this issue, another 27.1% do not know how it will all end.
The survey was conducted from 3 to 12 May with 1100 respondents.
About 3 million ethnic Russians live in Kazakhstan. The country has the longest continuous land border in the world with Russia.
