An absolute majority of Member States voted for the relevant decision during a special session of the WHO Regional Committee for Europe.
The World Health Organization will close the European Office for the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases in Moscow. Its functions will be transferred to Copenhagen, Health Minister Viktor Lyashko said on Facebook on Monday, May 15.
He noted that the absolute majority of Member States voted for the relevant decision today during a special session of the WHO Regional Committee for Europe.
Lyashko recalled that Ukraine started this process in May last year – then the WHO promised to “study the possibilities of moving the office from Moscow.”
“I would like to thank the partners for their political and financial support. Special thanks to the governments of the countries that have confirmed their financial contributions, thanks to which the full funding of the Copenhagen office has been achieved for the next which is two years. It is a decision supported by the firm position of each of the countries, which was preceded by heated discussions. It is a decision that reflects the unique perspective of the European region,” Liashko wrote.
Earlier, Lyashko said that the Ministry of Health is preparing to lift the imposed quarantine due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
