Recep Tayyip Erdogan is leading the presidential election in Turkey after 98% of the votes were counted. Anadolu wrote this on Monday, May 15.
After 98.82% of the ballots were counted, Erdogan won 49.35% of the vote, but did not get 50% of the victory. At the same time, his main rival is the candidate from the six-party Opposition Association National Alliance Kemal Kilicdaroglu – 45%. Sinan Ogan, the right-wing Ancestral Alliance candidate, received 5.22% of the votes.
President Erdogan still won 51 provinces (mainly the central and northern parts of the country, partially the southern, eastern and western provinces). Opposition leader Kilicdaroglu won 30 provinces (in the east, west and partly in the south). The capital province of Ankara and the most populous Istanbul continue to show strong support for Kilicdaroglu.
Counting of votes continues on ballots received from overseas polling stations. There is still a possibility to determine the winner of the first round of the presidential election.
If none of the candidates gets 50% and one vote today, the presidential race will proceed to the second round, which will take place on May 28.
Remember, on Sunday, May 14, the election of the President and Parliament of the 28th session was held in Turkey. Erdogan handed out money to children right at the polling station in one of the secondary schools in Istanbul.
