Then, on the night of February 7-8, in the battle for the Conoco natural gas processing plant on the east bank of the Euphrates River, one of the few direct clashes between Americans and Russians took place.
The War Horse managed to communicate with three participants in the events.
“Military” writes that the Americans estimated the advancing total forces of Russian mercenaries at the battalion level – about 500 fighters and 27 pieces of equipment.
The offensive began with the shelling of the territory of the plant – tanks, mortars and artillery were working. Part of the artillery assets of the Russians were destroyed by MQ-1 Predator UAV missiles. After that, the American command tried to contact the Russians in order to agree on an end to the attack. However, Russia denied its participation in the assault.
The mercenaries were opposed by an American Quick Reaction Force (QRF) group, which consisted of less than 50 Marines and Green Berets and an unnamed number of allied units from the Syrian Democratic Forces.
US special forces had several Oshkosh M-ATVs and MRAPs based on an unnamed truck. The combat vehicles were armed with remote-controlled weapon stations with machine guns of 12.7 × 99 caliber (.50 BMG).
The enemy infantry managed to come within a distance of less than 1 km, but they were destroyed by machine gun fire.
Then all 10 tanks followed the offensive. The Americans did not have anti-tank weapons.
According to new data, two pairs of AH-64 Apache attack helicopters played a decisive role in defeating the Assadites and Russian mercenaries. It was from the air that they managed to destroy 9 out of 10 tanks and six guns of the enemy armored group.
American special forces believe that the Russians lost about 350 soldiers killed that night. Recall, the Security Service of Ukraine published the names of 50 of them. However, no Americans were wounded during the battle.
