The Storm Shadow missile is capable of hitting targets at a distance of no more than 250 km and is somewhat inferior in this respect to the American ATACMS missiles.
The UK has donated several Storm Shadow long-range cruise missiles to Ukraine, bolstering the Armed Forces ahead of an expected counter-offensive against Russian forces. This was reported by CNN, citing sources on Thursday, May 11.
The Storm Shadow is a stealthy, long-range cruise missile jointly developed by the UK and France, usually air-launched. It is capable of hitting targets at a distance of more than 250 kilometers and is somewhat inferior in this respect to the American ATACMS surface-to-surface missiles, which Ukraine has long requested.
A Western official told the TV channel that the UK had received assurances from the Ukrainian government that the missiles would only be used on sovereign Ukrainian territory and not on Russian territory.
The missile is “a game-changer in terms of range,” a senior US military official told CNN. Kyiv is getting the opportunities it has been asking for since the beginning of the war. Currently, the maximum range of weapons provided by the United States for Ukraine is approximately 80 kilometers.
The missile deployment comes as Ukrainian forces prepare to launch a counter-offensive aimed at liberating Kremlin-held territory in the east and south of the country.
Earlier, the media reported that the UK was ready to provide long-range missiles to the Armed Forces of Ukraine. And one of the options is air-launched Storm Shadow cruise missiles, which can be installed on Soviet-made Ukrainian jets.
Recall, President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Ukraine still needs “some time” before it launches a counter-offensive in order to receive more than the promised military aid to the West.
