The Russian leadership needs something to appease its insatiable society, which supports radical actions and the number of deaths among Ukrainians, the president explained.
President Volodymyr Zelensky attributes the increase in the number of shellings on Ukrainian territory by Russia to the desire of the military-political leadership of the aggressor country to “sell” at least some victories in its society. He said this at a press conference in Kyiv with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Tuesday, May 9.
“In my opinion, today the Russian Federation, its military-political leadership, as they say, have to “sell” something to their society. Because there are no victories, but there is a society that is insatiable. We see how they support radical actions , or the death toll. “They always enjoy it as a fact. They failed to ‘sell’ Bakhmut because they failed to acquire it. This is their last ‘important operation’ – they had time to do it before May 9,” Zelensky said.
He added that against this background, the Russians could sell it or the “victory” with information.
“In particular, the capture or destruction of this or that city. That is, they failed before the 9th (to capture Bakhmut – ed.), so they have to show that they destroyed something again,” said of the president.
It will be remembered that on the night of May 9, Russian troops again fired missiles into Ukraine. In two waves of shelling, they launched 25 Caliber and Kh-101 / Kh-555 cruise missiles. Of these, 23 were destroyed.
