Canada declared a member of the Chinese diplomatic mission persona non grata, in response, China expelled a Canadian consul in Shanghai. This was announced on May 8 and 9 by the countries’ foreign ministries.
For example, on Monday Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly declared Zhao Wei, a diplomat from the Chinese Consulate General in Toronto, as persona non grata.
“We will not tolerate foreign interference in our internal affairs in any form,” she stressed.
It was noted that the decision was made “after a thorough study of all factors.”
Beijing on Tuesday strongly condemned Ottawa’s “baseless” move and decided to expel the Canadian consul in Shanghai, Jennifer Lynn Lalonde, from the country.
“In response to Canada’s unreasonable move, China decided to declare Jennifer Lynn Lalonde, Consul of the Canadian Consulate General in Shanghai, as persona non grata and asked her to leave China no later than May 13,” said Chinese Foreign Ministry in a statement.
It was previously reported that around 80 members of the European Parliament called for the declaration of Chinese Ambassador to France Lu Shae as persona non grata for his words about Crimea and the illegitimacy of the sovereignty of the former republics of Soviet.
