The German arms manufacturer Rheinmetall is ready to produce 600,000 shells per year for Ukraine.
This was announced on May 5 to the Handelsblatt newspaper by the head of the concern, Armin Papperger.
He spoke about this after the European Commissioner for Industry Thierry Breton visited the Rheinmetall plant in Unterlus (Lower Saxony), the newspaper specifies.
The publication recalls that the EU promised to supply Ukraine with a million artillery shells in a year. Breton said that this task must be completed quickly, as intense fighting continues and the Ukrainian army may run out of ammunition.
According to the publication, it is not easy for European countries to increase the production of shells, since after the Cold War, arms companies reduced the corresponding capacity.
To resume production, the EU will allocate 500 million euros, and another 500 million will be provided by individual EU countries. Later it is planned to spend another 1 billion euros on the production of ammunition.
On Friday, the European Commission announced that this scheme for the supply of artillery ammunition to Ukraine was finally agreed upon.
The official website of the EU states that the funds will be directed to the production of 155-millimeter shells and, if necessary, rockets.
