This decision was made allegedly due to the lack of shells among the “Wagnerites,” explained Yevgeny Prigozhin.
The founder of the Russian PMC Wagner, Yevgeny Prigozhin, said that his mercenaries will leave their positions in the city of Bakhmut on May 10 and hand them over to the units of the Russian Defense Ministry. He said this in an address on Friday, May 5.
“I officially appeal to the Chief of the General Staff, the Minister of Defense, the Supreme Commander and the people of Russia. I declare on behalf of the fighters of PMC Wagner, on behalf of the command of PMC Wagner, on May 10, 2023, forced we transfer the positions in the village of Bakhmut to the units of the Ministry of Defense and withdraw the remnants of the PMC behind the camps to lick their wounds,” he said.
According to Prigozhin, he made this decision allegedly because of the lack of shells among the Wagnerites.
“I withdrew the Wagner units from Bakhmut, because for lack of ammunition they would surely perish a senseless death,” he added.

It should be noted that on the eve of this statement, Prigozhin published a video against the background of the dead “Wagnerites” in one day. He turned to Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and Chief of the Russian General Staff Valery Gerasimov with an appeal to provide ammunition, because his people were dying in large numbers due to “shell hunger”.
Recall that the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reported on the heavy losses of PMC Wagner.
