Citizens of Latvia, Estonia and Ukraine have been misled and involved in forced labor in the construction industry.
In Finland, they discovered possible cases of human trafficking in the construction sector, the victims of which, in particular, were citizens of Ukraine. It was announced on May 2 by Yle TV and radio company.
The Finnish police, together with colleagues in Estonia, discovered that foreigners from Latvia and Estonia were being lured to Finland to work in conditions similar to forced labor.
There are 11 defendants in the case. Prosecutors charged them with, among other things, aggravated human trafficking, pension fraud, and crimes involving the use of firearms.
It is known that the criminal group received a profit of 2.3 million euros from its illegal activities.
The preliminary investigation showed that the suspects recruited workers who came to Finland to perform various tasks in the construction industry through several companies.
Law enforcement officials believe that the victims are misguided, involved in debt, so their willingness to work cannot be considered a voluntary choice. They often work overtime in poor conditions, in some cases without pay. Also, violence and threats were used against some employees.
According to the police, there could be hundreds of victims, mostly citizens of Latvia, Estonia and Ukraine. Among those who will go to the docks are mostly Estonians.
Earlier, border guards blocked the international human trafficking channel, through which Ukrainian women fell into sexual slavery abroad.
