Kyiv insisted on granting the status of a candidate for the European Union in June and it understands that this does not mean immediate membership.
Ukraine will cross the path of the EU candidate sooner if France and other countries show leadership. This was stated by the spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Oleh Nikolenko, reports Interfax-Ukraine on May 23.
This is how the diplomat commented on the statement of the French Minister for European Affairs, Clement Bon, that the process of Ukraine’s accession to the EU could take 15 or 20 years.
“Granting candidate status in the EU does not mean immediate membership. It is a process that needs to be completed. And we are confident that we will go down this path more quickly if France and other influential countries in Europe shows leadership, ”he said.
Nikolenko stressed that the war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine showed the need to rethink the future of Europe.
“The strategies that have guided politicians in Europe so far have not been able to secure the continent of Europe from the new invasion. Talk about alternatives that could replace Ukraine’s full integration into the EU-a change in form, but not in content. This path will not make the European community stronger and more prosperous, “he said.
According to the spokesman, Ukraine insists on giving it the status of an EU candidate in June.
“Today, Ukraine is the only place in Europe where people defend European values at the cost of their own lives. The candidacy will be an important signal for Ukrainians that Europe values and respects their efforts. , ”Nikolenko said.
Earlier, the Ministry of Economy said that Ukraine plans to become a full member of the European Union in 2024, and receive candidate status this summer.
