The Washington Post reports that the informal meeting took place before the opening of the White House Correspondents Association Dinner, which is held annually at the Hilton Hotel in Washington. The President and his wife, Jill, spoke privately with Gershkovich’s parents. The content of their conversation is not specified.
Among the other dinner guests, in particular, were Alexei Navalny’s wife Yulia and his daughter Daria, as well as basketball player Brittney Griner, who was recently exchanged for the Russian drug dealer Bout.
The US State Department has granted Gershkowitz “wrongful detention” status, potentially opening up the possibility of his exchange. His lawyers are also counting on exchanging Gershkovich for one of the Russians, a source familiar with the case told Meduzi.
Gershkovich was supported by the largest American media, as well as foreign journalists working in Moscow.
On December 8, Greiner’s basketball player was exchanged for Viktor Bout, a Russian convicted in the United States. The exchange took place at Abu Dhabi airport.
Greiner, who played for a club in Russia, was detained at a Russian airport in February 2022 and convicted of alleged drug smuggling. Byt was sentenced in the United States to 25 years in prison in 2012 for illegal arms dealing.
