More than fifteen days dozens migrants, mostly Venezuelans, remain on the Accord Line, the border between Chile and Peru. The situation provoked a migration crisis and a diplomatic stalemate between the two countries.
In this regard, the regional governor of Tacna, Louis Torres, indicated that the population of his jurisdiction was “disappointed” by the situation and organized anti-immigration marches.
“People are here very annoying with migrants. They occupied parks and gardens to make their tents; and it aggravated the mood. Was March and they threaten another anti-immigration march; and it worries me because as an authority I have to stay calm, sane and try to solve the problem, ”he said in Saturday Focus.
robledo towers emphasized that at present the most “inconvenient” for its population is that migrants blocked access to Takna, which is detrimental to the region’s economy.
“Main topic tacna The fact is that we live off trade, on the passage of Chileans, Bolivians and Argentines. After the pandemic (…), the political conflicts that we had (…), the economy went bankrupt. We tried to get out through trade, through visitors who come to buy, and suddenly this problem repels our customers. what brings us pretty upset”, he stressed.
“The problem here is that we have 200 migrants at the border, on the Chilean side, trying to block the roads. At first, these were those that went to Arica, from Peru to Chile, and now they have been joined by the one that enters Peru, ”he stressed.
Similarly, he argued that there was an objection to the provision of temporary housing for migrants.
“Some demonize it as if we are going to give the land to the Venezuelans (…) But if it is temporary and on the border outside the city of TacnaUnited Nations should do their job, register them and then take them out of the country,” he said.
Foreign Ministry asks for “agility” in decision-making
Faced with this situation, the governor of Tacna asked office The Peruvian government will “speed up” coordination with its Chilean counterpart to ensure that the migration crisis is resolved as soon as possible.
“I hope the government will listen to me, let’s put officethat they extend a helping hand to the Chilean and together, like brothers, they try to solve the human problem,” he stressed.
“I want the chancellor and the president to understand us that they can make the necessary decisions to move forward, otherwise things will only get worse,” he added.
In this sense, robledo towers insisted on the proposal to introduce humanitarian corridor in agreement with the countries concerned.
“I think that both the governments of Peru and ChileThey should take action on this issue through the ministries of foreign affairs and make a humanitarian corridor or organize humanitarian flights and take these people out because they are people and we cannot keep them in limbo for so long. And this is unfair from a human point of view,” he said.
“In this area, both Foreign Ministries must act very quickly (…) and accurately. We need a little more flexibility in our office and I am sure that these days the Government will take appropriate decisions to resolve this issue once and for all,” he added.
