USA is moving troops to East Africa in case the evacuation of US embassy personnel to Sudan due to clashes between rival factions in Khartoum, officials said on Thursday.
“We are deploying additional contingency forces around the region to ensure and possibly facilitate the departure of United States Embassy personnel from SudanThis is stated in a statement from the Pentagon, without specifying either the country or the number of troops involved.
A U.S. official later said on condition of anonymity that more U.S. forces would be deployed to Djibouti.
Sudanese civil war
More than 300 people have been killed since fighting broke out on Saturday between forces loyal to the army commander. SudanAbdel Fatah al-Burhan and Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, commander of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (FAR).
Some of the fierce fighting has taken place in the capital, Khartoum, a city of five million people, most of whom are locked in their homes without electricity, food or water.
UN Secretary General, Anthony Guterres, called on Thursday for a ceasefire “for at least three days” in Sudan amid Eid al-Fitr celebrations, which mark the end of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan. (AFP)
