Pan American Health OrganizationOPS) warned this Thursday that the American continent is facing an “inevitable crisis” of disease outbreaks thought to be contained due to the backlog of public vaccination services.

At a press conference director OPSJarbas Barbosa said the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the immunization gap for diseases such as polio or measles that could re-emerge in the region.

“As we emerge from the ravages COVID-19 pandemicthe risk of new and emerging outbreaks in the region is at its highest level in 30 years,” said the director of PAHO, a Washington-based organization affiliated with the World Health Organization (WHO).

Barbosa explained that America has historically been the “world leader” in the fight against diseases such as polio, which was eradicated in 1994, measles in 2016 and tetanus in 2017.

“Serious failures”

But the past decade has seen “major setbacks,” including plummeting vaccination coverage rates, inadequate funding, and a growing reluctance to get vaccinated due to “misinformation.”

” COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated each of these trends,” said Barbosa, who warned that America “will face an inevitable crisis related to vaccination services.”

In 2021, more than 2.7 million children under one year of age, one in five, did not receive all doses of vaccines in 2021, according to PAHO, leaving them susceptible to diseases such as polio, tetanus, measles or diphtheria.

However, Barbosa assured that OPS it is “working closely” with the region’s health ministries to “restore past vaccination coverage rates”. (EFE)
