China tops the list of countries that have applied for the newest patents for COVID-19 vaccines and treatments between January 2020 and September 2022, according to a new report released Thursday by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

Out of 1298 patents for vaccine on request, an Asian country requested 573 registrations, followed by the United States with 356, Germany with 57 and South Korea with 56.
A total of 7,758 patents have been filed worldwide for vaccines and treatments, a small percentage of which are based on conventional medicine.
According to WIPO, the requests came equally from companies and research organizations, and in at least a quarter of the cases they came from more than one developer involved in the research process.
Antibody Therapy
By typology, antibody therapy against COVID-19 they were the ones with the fastest growth in the early years of the pandemic, accounting for a third of the requests filed with WIPO.
The organization’s CEO Daren Tan praised the “speed of innovation in the field” and the strength of the foundation on which it has been built over the past decades. (As reported by EFE)
