Cosmonauts Sergei Prokopiev and Dmitry Petelin on Wednesday successfully completed an almost eight-hour spacewalk to prepare the Nauka module of the Russian segment of the International Space Station (ISS).
Prokopiev and Petelin, using the European Space Agency (ESA) manipulator, remotely controlled by cosmonaut Andrei Fedyaev, transferred the radiator of the Russian Rassvet module to Nauka and the experimental gateway from the ISS.
Both Rassvet-based teams have been in space since May 2010, when they arrived aboard US shuttle Atlantis STS-132.
astronaut walk
The spacewalk, originally scheduled to run for 6 hours and 37 minutes, stretched out for just over an hour than anticipated, which can be seen in the live EVA broadcast.
This Wednesday’s walk was the first of the year for Russian cosmonauts; the fourth is Prokopiev, wearing a Russian Orlan helmet with red stripes, and the second is Petelin, in a space suit with blue stripes.
In addition to this walk, this crew will make two more on April 25 and May 4.
Both last December astronauts The spacewalk had to be canceled due to a malfunction of the Soyuz MS-22 spacecraft, which had a leak in its external cooling system.
The disabled spacecraft returned to Earth last March without crew members on board.
The crew of the Soyuz MS-22 spacecraft — Russians Prokopiev and Petelin and an American astronaut of Salvadoran origin Frank Rubio — will return next September aboard the Soyuz MS-23 spacecraft.
