Kyrgyzstan is considering options for abandoning the Cyrillic alphabet

The representatives proposed to translate the alphabet to Latin, since the country is the only Turkic-speaking country that uses the Cyrillic alphabet.

The head of Kyrgyzstan’s state language commission, Kanybek Osmonaliev, has expressed his readiness to switch from Cyrillic to Latin if an appropriate political decision is made. This was reported on March 19 by the Interfax-Ukraine agency.

This is how he reacted to the initiative of parliament representatives, who proposed to translate the Kyrgyz alphabet from Cyrillic to Latin.

“If a political decision is made, we are ready, many options are developed,” said Osmonaliyev.

According to him, such attempts have been made in Kyrgyzstan since 1993.

In addition, at a meeting on April 19, the country’s parliament adopted a draft law on the state language in the second reading. It was approved in first reading in January.

If the document is finally adopted, the use of the Kyrgyz language will be mandatory in government, defense, international agreements, education, science, culture and media (the amount of television and radio broadcasting in Kyrgyz must be at least at 65%).

Remember, according to the Constitution of Kyrgyzstan, the Russian language has the status of an official language. In the territory of the republic, writing based on the Cyrillic alphabet is used.
