The counter-offensive could be successful if the Ukrainian forces manage to cause paralysis in the Russian military leadership and panic among the Russians.
The first day of the expected counter-offensive by the Armed Forces of Ukraine is likely to be decisive. It will be “Ukrainian longest day”. Said prediction in the pages of Foreign Policy on Tuesday, April 18, was expressed by Franz-Stefan Gadi, senior fellow at the International Institute for Strategic Studies on CyberPower and Future Conflicts.
In his article, the expert predicts that the first 24 hours of a possible Ukrainian counteroffensive will be “the longest day for the Ukrainian Armed Forces”, recalling the experience of previous wars, when the first stage of -attack often determines the nature of the next battle, decides victory or defeat, and determines the strategic effect of an offensive.
At the same time, Franz-Stefan Gadi said that only the higher command of Ukraine has information about whether the Armed Forces of Ukraine now have a decisive advantage in firepower, ammunition, troop strength and logistics on the battlefield. At the same time, discussions about when and where Ukrainian forces will strike and what effect the newly delivered weapons of the West will have, he said, are just speculation.
According to Gadi, the counter-offensive could be successful if the Ukrainian forces manage to paralyze the Russian military leadership and panic among the Russians. It will also help “to avoid exhaustion in the early hours of a future offensive.”
The expert notes that intangible factors, not just weapons, can work best: tactical surprise, battlefield leadership and morale.
“In this situation, the Ukrainian armored columns penetrated the Russian defenses, quickly moved to the Russian rear and threatened the command and control nodes such as the military headquarters and supply centers, adding of shock and paralysis,” wrote Franz-Stefan Gady.
At the same time, he said that it is not known whether this will be enough for long-term strategic victories, “not to mention victory in the war” of Ukraine.
Recall that earlier the media, citing a “leak from the Pentagon,” named a possible date for the counteroffensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
