In Cairo, they came to this decision after negotiations with high-ranking US officials held in March. Instead of Russian help, the Egyptian authorities decided to produce artillery ammunition for Ukraine. This was reported by The Washington Post, citing five Pentagon documents that were leaked in April.
New documents, which journalists obtained from an array of materials, indicate that in early March, the Egyptian authorities abandoned plans for deliveries to Moscow. Cairo delayed the deal by the Russians and approved the sale of 152mm and 155mm artillery shells to the US, which would then be given to Ukraine.
WP writes that the American authorities were trying to enlist new fans and ammunition, which are necessary for the APU. And Egypt intended to use its arms production capabilities for Ukraine as a “lever” to obtain advanced American military products.
Recall that earlier The Washington Post reported that secret Pentagon documents indicate that Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi planned to produce 40 thousand missiles for Russia in February and instructed officials to keep the production and shipment of missiles secret “to avoid problems with the West.”
