Tokyo and Seoul are boosting cooperation amid increased missile and nuclear threats from North Korea.
Japan and South Korea agreed to boost security cooperation amid North Korea’s threat in their first talks in five years. This was reported on April 17 by the Kyodo agency.
It is known that the high officials of the ministries of foreign affairs and defense of the two countries also decided to increase the coordination with the United States in the exchange of information in real time during the North Korean missile launches.
In addition, the parties “deepened mutual understanding about security and defense policy.”
As the agency stressed, the meeting took place against the backdrop of Seoul’s concern that Tokyo is seeking to develop the capability to strike targets in enemy territory.
It will be recalled that the countries suspended security talks in 2018 after South Korea’s Supreme Court ordered Japanese companies to pay compensation to residents of the country who were forced to work during the Japanese occupation of 1910-1945.
It was previously reported that North Korea had launched a new intercontinental ballistic missile Hwaseong-18 with a solid fuel engine to the Sea of Japan.
