The politician and journalist has been in a pre-trial detention center since April 2022 on charges of “military fakes”, treason and activities of an “undesirable” organization.
The Moscow City Court sentenced Russian opposition leader and journalist Vladimir Kara-Murza to 25 years in a strict regime colony based on a combination of sentences under three articles of the Criminal Code. It was reported on April 17 by Mediazona.
It was noted that he received seven years in the case of “military fakes”, three years for participation in the activities of an “undesirable” organization and 18 years in the case of treason.
Kara-Murza was also sentenced to restriction of freedom for one year and six months, a fine of 400,000 rubles, and a seven-year press ban.
Many journalists, relatives of the convicted, as well as representatives of foreign embassies came to the court to announce the verdict, but the process was held behind closed doors.
A week ago, the oppositionist made the last word in court. Its text has been published in full Twitter April 10th.
Kara-Murza emphasized that he was in prison for his political views, in particular, for speaking out against the war in Ukraine.
“In the last word, they usually ask for an acquittal. For someone who has not committed crimes, the only legal sentence is an acquittal. But I am not asking this court for anything. I know my sentence . .. But I also know that the day will come, when the darkness in our country will disappear; when black will be called black and white – white; when it will be recognized at the official level that two and two are still four; when the war will be called war, and the usurper – the usurper; and when it is the recognized criminals who instigated and unleashed this war, and not the people who tried to stop it,” he said.
Recall that the politician was detained in Moscow on April 11, 2022 and a protocol was made under the article about disobeying the police. The next day, he was sent to a special detention center for 15 days, where he became a defendant in the case of “falsifications” about the Russian army.
It soon became clear that the formal reason for initiating the criminal case against Kara-Murza was his speech to the Arizona House of Representatives in the United States on March 15, 2022.
On April 22 last year, Kara-Murza was sent to a pre-trial detention center. Later, he was charged with carrying out the activities of an “undesirable organization” for holding a round table in support of political prisoners in the Sakharovo Center, and with treason for speaking at public events in Lisbon, Helsinki and Washington.
