Radio Liberty writes about this with reference to the website of the Iranian judicial system Mizan Online.
One commander was sentenced to 10 years in prison, while nine others were given sentences ranging from one to three years.
The actions of the commander who directed the loss of the aircraft “were due to his ignorance of the situation and the erroneous belief that the detected target was hostile.” The commander of the Tor M-1 anti-aircraft missile system “fired two missiles” at a passenger plane “against orders” and without obtaining permission. None of the accused are named.
Given the scale of influence and consequences of this event, the main defendant was sentenced to the maximum penalty, the Iranian publication points out.
Recall, on January 8, 2020, the aircraft of flight PS 752 “Tehran – Kyiv” of the Ukrainian airline UIA crashed in Tehran. On board the aircraft were citizens of seven countries: Iran; Canada; Sweden; Afghanistan; Germany, UK and Ukraine. They all died. On January 11, Iran officially admitted that it mistakenly shot down a UIA plane, and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed responsibility for this.
Last January, Iran refused to join the International Group for Coordination and Assistance to the Victims of UIA Flight PS752 in negotiations on compensation.
