Ukraine began to export to the European market a large amount of agricultural products with very low production costs. This resulted in local farmers not being able to sell their produce.
The Hungarian authorities, following Poland, banned the import of grains and oilseeds, as well as some other agricultural products from Ukraine. This was said by the Minister of Agriculture of Hungary, Istvan Nagy, reports 24.hu.
“The government is committed to representing the interests of Hungarian farmers, and in the absence of effective measures from the EU, it, like Poland, will temporarily ban the import of grains and oilseeds from Ukraine and some other agricultural products in Hungary,” Nagy said.
According to him, the continuation of current market trends will cause serious damage to Hungarian agriculture. Because of this, it has become necessary to take measures to prevent it.
Nagy also emphasized that Ukrainian agriculture is working with production practices that are no longer used in the European Union. As a result, Ukraine began to export to the European market large amounts of chicken meat, eggs and honey, as well as grains and oilseeds with very low production costs. In turn, this led to the fact that Hungarian and Central European farmers could not sell their products.
At the same time, the Hungarian minister noted that the restriction on imports to Hungary is temporary. It will last until June 30, 2023. During this time, steps must be taken to find a solution.
It was previously reported that Poland has banned the import of Ukrainian grain and other agricultural products. In Ukraine, they said that the decisions of the Polish side contradict the agreements.
Recall that Ukraine exports a significant part of grain through the land border with Poland in connection with the full invasion of the Russian Federation and difficult export by sea. Most of the Ukrainian food, which should go in transit to other states, began to settle in the country. This caused protests among Polish farmers and led to the resignation of Agriculture Minister Henryk Kowalczyk.
