Germany shut down the last three nuclear power plants

It planned to decommission them on the last day of last year, but the government extended their work until mid-April.

On Saturday, April 15, Germany finally stopped the production of electricity at nuclear power plants – the era of nuclear energy, which lasted 62 years, has ended in the country. This was reported by Reuters.

Berlin is reportedly decommissioning the last three nuclear power plants. Work has been stopped at the Emsland, Isar 2 and Neckarwestheim 2 nuclear power plants in the states of Lower Saxony, Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, respectively.

It is noted that it was planned to decommission them on the last day of last year, but the government extended their work until mid-April due to a sharp reduction in the use of Russian gas and an increase in world energy prices.

Critics fear that until Germany has a strong enough infrastructure to generate clean energy, which could take years, the country will rely more on polluting fuels (such as coal) to make up for losses.

Recall that Germany has pledged to completely abandon nuclear energy by the end of 2022. In early September, it was reported that two nuclear power plants, Neckarwestheim and Isar 2, are on standby until the spring of 2023. And the Emsland station is intended to close in 2022.

But in November 2022, the Bundestag extended the operation of three nuclear power plants.
