Near the airport of the Swiss city of Geneva on Friday, May 20, a large fire broke out, leading to disruption of air traffic. This was reported by the local TV channel RTS.
According to the air harbor representative, in the afternoon the building of the new center for asylum seekers under construction, located outside the perimeter of the airport, burned down. Due to the smoke, it was decided to suspend the reception of the aircraft, shipping – at the discretion of the pilots.
Thus, nine planes were redirected to other airports, the departure of 13 liners was postponed.
The Geneva fire service clarified that it received the fire signal at 17:06 local time (18:06 Kyiv time). The fire broke out on the top floor of a building being constructed with roof insulation.
As indicated, it was the burning of the insulating materials that caused the thick black smoke. Fire resistance is complicated by having a dozen gas cylinders that can explode.
Meanwhile, videos surfaced on the Web, showing an explosion thundering while extinguishing a fire near the airport. One casualty was reported.
