Major floods were observed in the country: tractors were submerged in fields, and people were pumping water out of houses.

Severe floods were observed in some regions of Ukraine. High water floods dams, roads, cuts communications between communities, and due to flooding of fields, the sowing campaign is delayed. Rescuers declared an orange alert. At the same time, forecasters warned that the situation will worsen in the coming days.

In the Rivne region, from the beginning of this week, rivers overflowed their banks, flooding vegetable gardens and fields. The people of the region are used to big spring water, but they haven’t seen such water in a long time.

“For the first time in 10 years, we have a flood, a real flood,” local residents told the Rivne-1 TV channel.

The territory of the Dubensky district is already flooded due to the Ikva River, which has overflowed its banks.
The situation is also difficult in other districts of the region, but the worst is in Polissya. From a bird’s eye view, it is noticeable – water is everywhere, in household plots and in the courtyards of houses.

Experts explain that all this is due to the sharp melting of snow and heavy rain – almost 62% of the annual rain falls in March. According to officials, in the Rivne region there is a threat of flooding of about 77 settlements.

The Dnieper overflows its banks

On Thursday, April 13, the coastal part of the city was completely flooded in Kyiv. In particular, water flooded the embankment at Nikolskaya Slobidka. The rise in the water level in the Dnieper River is due to spring flooding.

The elements manifested themselves more seriously in the Vyshgorodsky district of the Kyiv region. So, on April 13, in the village of Ivankov, as a result of prolonged rains, the dam of the local lake was washed away, the water fell into the river, passing through residential streets. The water rushed in and flooded two streets.

“The police and the State Emergency Service are doing their best to help local residents overcome the disaster, the relevant services are working to clean the drainage canals. The water level is gradually decreasing,” said by Andriy Nebytov, head of Kyiv regional police.

Tractors plow through the fields

In Volyn, farmers could not start sowing in spring due to flooding of agricultural land and changing weather. According to Alexander Knysh, head of the crop production department of the regional department of agro-industrial development, the weather conditions have already caused damage to farmers.

Due to heavy rains and snow, 40% of the fields in the farm of Ruslan Khomich, a farmer from the Lutsk region, were flooded.

“It’s about 250 hectares of land,” the farmer explained to TSN.

The man added that he still cannot start the spring sowing campaign, because the equipment is disturbed in the field: “The swans are now nesting in the fields, where the fields should be planted. Last year, the potatoes have been planted these days, and now there is snow and frost, and rehydration.

“This year, fewer vegetables will be planted because of their low purchase prices. The fields are planned to be sown mainly with soybeans, corn and sunflowers,” the farmer added.

Highway flooded in Chernihiv region

In the Chernihiv region, due to a significant increase in the water level in the Desna, road traffic was previously disrupted on the T2502 Novgorod-Seversky-Shostka highway, near the village of Putivsk. The bend goes through Korop.

As of April 13, rescuers reported that the water had already disrupted transportation links with nine communities. In total, 275 households in seven settlements were flooded in the Chernihiv region.

“There was no flooding in residential buildings. Transport connections with 9 communities were disrupted, and State Emergency Service units, including two watercraft, were involved to provide assistance,” said Oleksandr Khorunzhiy, press officer of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine.

New threat

Ukrgidromettsentr warned that in the period from 13 to 17 April, the flooding situation will worsen. In the coming days, rivers are expected to overflow in northern and central Ukraine. In particular, it is possible to raise the water level by 0.1-0.3 m per day in the Upper Dnieper.

Ukrainians are warned about possible inundation of floods, roads, settlements, houses and other buildings:

• in the Chernihiv region the third (red) level of danger was declared;

• in Novgorod-Seversky (Zaitsevo village) and Koryukovsky (Zagrebelye village) districts of the Chernihiv region – the second (orange) level of danger due to the floods of the Desna and Snov rivers;

• in the Kyiv, Vyshgorodsky, Brovarsky and Boryspilsky districts of the Kyiv region – the second (orange) level of danger due to a possible increase in the water level of the Dnieper and the Kiev Sea;

• in the river communities of Cherkasy, Poltava, Kirovohrad, Dnepropetrovsk, Zaporozhye regions – the second (orange) level of danger;

• in Chernihiv, due to the possible flooding of Zolotoy Bereg beach, the first (yellow) level was announced.
