On Tuesday, the Chilean parliament approved a reduction in the working week from 45 to 40 hours. This law has strong support from citizens and has yet to be promulgated by President Gabriel Boric in order for it to come into effect.
The rule, which has also been approved by both trade unions and employers, has been endorsed by almost all parties with political representation and makes Chile the second country in the region, after Ecuador, to set a 40-hour workday per week.
“Today it was demonstrated that although some believed that it was impossible to improve the quality of life of our country’s workers, it can be done,” the Minister of Labor and Social Protection said after the vote. Jeanette Hara.
The reduction in working hours will be gradual
A measure that could be made public on 1 May on the occasion of Labor Dayproposes an initial reduction from 45 to 44 work hours per week during the first year of the law.
The second reduction will be to 42 hours from the third year, with the 40 hour target reached in the fifth.
Hara stressed that the law was supported by an “overwhelming majority”, since it was only rejected by the far right. Republican Partyand recalled that the reduction of working hours “is a requirement of many years ago.”
“We thank the many layers of the opposition that have taken the step and joined the ruling party. We believe this is for the benefit of all. Chile”, he added.
Project presented in 2017
The initial draft was submitted in 2017. communist party – one of the political formations that Boric rules – but he faced many difficulties during his first parliamentary discussions.
The progressive president, who made some changes to the original draft, such as gradualism, gave it a new impetus last year and asked parliament in August to process it “urgently”.
Once put into action Chile will become with Ecuador, except in the region where the working day in most countries is 48 hours a week. (EFE)
