America may introduce restrictions against the backdrop of the recent deterioration of relations between the countries.
The US government may now be preparing to announce the imposition of sanctions against “influential persons” in Hungary. Such a move is said to cause a breakdown in relations between the countries. This was reported on Tuesday, April 11, by the Hungarian edition 444.hu, citing diplomatic sources.
The media say that sanctions may be announced on April 12. A press conference by US Ambassador to Hungary David Pressman is scheduled for this date.
The situation in 2014, when the US barred eight Hungarian current and former officials from entering amid deteriorating relations between Washington and Budapest, could be repeated, the sources said.
Recently, relations between the countries have also deteriorated, the newspaper notes.
This was due to Pressman’s harsh statements against the Hungarian authorities. He criticized Hungarian officials for talking about promoting peace while leaning towards Russia.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has publicly accused the American diplomat of allegedly putting pressure on his government.
Pressman said that the attacks in Hungary corresponded to the position of the US authorities.
It should be noted that Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto, in his speech to the UN General Assembly on February 23, called for “negotiations between the United States and Russia to end the war in Ukraine.”
Even earlier, Orban argued that the war waged by the Russian Federation against Ukraine would end if the United States stopped supporting Kyiv, and therefore said “the world depends on Washington.”
In the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, such attacks from official Budapest drew attention to the fact that Hungary is not in a position to decide when peace negotiations will begin.
