President of Chile Gabriel Boricannounced this Thursday that its executive branch will increase by 40% annual funds earmarked for combating and preventing insecurity in the country, with an annual allocation of $1,500 million (€1,373 million at today’s exchange rate) in the budget for measures to reduce crime . .
“We must act now with urgency and that is why I have ordered $1,500 million a year (€1,373 million at today’s exchange rate) to be added to the increases we have already made. in the 2023 budget, which implies a 40% increase in security-related functions,” Boric said at a conference at the presidential palace of La Moneda.
The decision comes after the death of a Carabinieri agent in a routine operation in central Santiago early Thursday morning, the third policeman to die in the line of duty in less than a month.
The President explained that the new resources will be directed to several areas: strengthening the equipment of law enforcement agencies, strengthening criminal prosecution and investigation of already committed crimes, increasing the presence of agents on the streets, controlling regular and illegal trade and, finally, improving public space.
Plan “Street without violence”
Boric called for the “unity” of all institutions and political parties on measures against insecurity and reiterated that the “chile enemy” of the perpetrators is “a united Chile”.
“We need unity. There are no more wedges between us. Every fight between politicians is another space for crime. Let’s move forward together with joint leadership, move forward to fight those who want to steal our neighborhoods, our families and our police officers,” the president said.
The President emphasized that, apart from the “emergencies” of insecurity in the short term, this phenomenon has “multiple causes”.
“The most horrific expression of insecurity is the killings, which we have had to regret in recent years, but at the same time as we face crime, we must work to prevent for the future. Investments in education, culture, science are still colossally relevant,” he said.
In this sense, Boric also announced the implementation of a plan called “Street Without Violence”, which provides, among other things, the creation of green spaces, sports fields and educational spaces in several communes that unite a third of the population of Chile. and which concentrate 50% of the crimes registered in the country.
In the early hours of last Thursday, a Carabinieri agent died in the line of duty – the third in less than a month – after being shot in the head during a routine check in the commune of Santiago, in the center of the capital, which sparked a reaction from politicians and authorities to take urgent action against violence.
The police officer’s death coincided with the day parliament approved the controversial security law, the Nain-Retamal Law, also called the “Light Trigger Law,” which gives carabinieri more freedom to maneuver when using firearms. .
