In the first phase, about 54 km of fence was built on the Latvian-Belarusian border.
In April of this year, the second stage of construction of the Latvian-Belarusian border fence will begin, this time the length will reach 63.9 km, according to Delfi.
In the first phase, about 54 km of fence was built on the Latvian-Belarusian border. These winter weather conditions are not conducive to continuing work in the swamp area. They will recover when the soil becomes more stable and the air temperature is constantly above +10 degrees.
Part of the challenge is the terrain: border infrastructure must be built on steep slopes and wetlands, while roads must be safe to drive on.
It was mentioned that in parallel with the construction of the fence, preparations began to equip the fence with modern technologies.
In general, the project involves the construction of a 173-kilometer Latvian-Belarusian border strip.
According to media reports, the first phase of the construction of the fence with a length of 85.9 km will be completed at the beginning of autumn this year, and the second (63.9 km) and the third phase (16.7 km) will be completed by the end of 2024.
“The total construction cost of the first two phases of border infrastructure construction is 102.7 million euros,” the report said.
In June in Poland, after six months of work, the construction of a five-meter fence on the border with Belarus was completed.
Recall that Latvia has reinstated mandatory military service, which was abolished in 2004.
