In April 2022, after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the social network Twitter restricted the accounts of the aggressor state, including the accounts of the President of the Russian Federation and the Russian government.
Twitter began displaying the accounts of Vladimir Putin, the Russian Foreign Ministry and several others linked to the Kremlin, as well as Russian state media. This was reported on Sunday, April 8, by The Telegraph, citing tests conducted last week.
Tests conducted by the publication last week showed that Russian government accounts were appearing at the top of certain search results and in suggestions for other accounts to follow.
In particular, we are talking about the accounts of President Putin, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and their embassy in Britain.
The former head of Twitter confirmed that this marks a departure from last year’s measures.
“It is highly unlikely that these changes occurred accidentally or without the knowledge and management of the company’s personnel,” he was quoted as saying in the publication.
Elon Musk acquired Twitter in October for $44 billion and has scrapped many of the social network’s moderation efforts, saying he wants to promote free speech.
Last week it was reported that Twitter had eased restrictions imposed in 2020 on the accounts of Russian and Chinese state media such as RT.com and the Global Times.
Social networks are considered an important part of the Kremlin’s disinformation. For example, the account of the Russian embassy in the UK was blocked due to the assertion that the Ukrainian armed forces shot their own citizens and Ukrainian soldiers “deserve death by hanging.”
In addition, a study of Twitter’s source code last week showed that its algorithm was reducing the ranking of publications related to the war in Ukraine.
Twitter’s current leadership has not yet responded to a request for comment.
It was previously reported that Musk “nominated” his dog as CEO of Twitter.
