Yesterday’s religious procession was once again overshadowed by an attempt to equate the victim and the aggressor, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said the March in Rome on Good Friday was once again overshadowed by an attempt to equate victim and aggressor. This was said on Facebook by the representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Oleg Nikolenko.
“Yesterday, on Good Friday, a great religious event took place in Rome – the Procession of the Cross. It symbolizes the victory of good over evil, light over darkness, faith over despair. We are very thanking Pope Francis for his concern for Ukraine and Ukrainians,” said Nikolenko.
However, he noted that the current procession was once again overshadowed by an attempt to equate the victim and the aggressor.
The representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs explained that these were texts read at the 10th station of the procession: on behalf of a Ukrainian teenager who found refuge in Italy after the capture of Mariupol by Russian troops, and a person Russian brother, a soldier, died, and father and grandfather disappeared as participants in Russia’s aggressive war against Ukraine.
“We are disappointed that the Holy See did not take into account the arguments of the Ukrainian side about the offensive nature of such a gesture. The joint participation of a Ukrainian and a Russian destroys the reality in which Russia sinks to the Ukrainians, which includes genocide against them. . Furthermore, such a step destroys the principles of justice and universal morality destroys the concept of peace and brotherhood,” he stressed.
Nikolenko also noted that “attempts to equate Ukraine, which is suffering, and Russia, which is suffering, are not conducive to reconciliation.”
Reconciliation, according to him, can come only after the Ukrainian victory, the punishment of all Russian criminals, repentance for the suffering and asking for forgiveness before the Ukrainians.
“We hope that the Holy See will continue to follow a strategy based on a deep understanding of justice and responsibility for restoring peace in Ukraine and establishing justice,” the spokesperson added.
Earlier it was reported that the Vatican reunited a Ukrainian and a Russian in the Way of the Cross. Pope Francis placed representatives of the aggressor country and the victim country side by side, combining the testimonies of Ukrainian and Russian teenagers.
