This is a clear signal that no country that violates the UN Charter should take positions in critical UN bodies.
Russia lost elections to three UN bodies this week, a sign that resistance to its invasion of Ukraine more than a year ago remains strong, the Associated Press reported.
It was noted that during the voting in the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC), which consists of 54 members, Russia was defeated by Romania in the struggle for a seat in the Commission on the Status of Women.
In addition, Russia lost Estonia’s membership on the executive board of the UN children’s agency UNICEF and was defeated by Armenia and the Czech Republic in a secret ballot for membership on the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice.
According to US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, this is a clear signal from ECOSOC members that no country should take positions in critical UN bodies when it openly violates the UN Charter.
It was also reported that when voting for members of the 14 commissions, councils and expert groups administered by ECOSOC, Russia was elected to the Commission for Social Development by acclamation, which the United States and Great Britain rejected, saying that Russia’s aggression violates international law and the territorial integrity of Ukraine.
The Russian Federation was also elected by acclamation to the Intergovernmental Working Group of Experts on International Accounting and Reporting Standards.
It was previously reported that Russia chaired the UN Security Council for a month.
