Ukraine is certainly not satisfied with another confirmation of the principle of open doors at the NATO summit in Vilnius. This is what Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba said on the air of the telethon.
According to him, “a difficult discussion is happening within NATO about what step the Alliance can take in Vilnius towards Ukraine’s membership.”
“I clearly told all our partners that we will not be satisfied with the confirmation of the open door principle. We have been hearing this since 2008. It is time to take a step towards these doors,” said Kuleba.
He added that any decision that means “from the phrase ‘the doors are open’ to the phrase ‘Ukraine is on the verge of NATO membership’ can be considered a success.”
The head of the Foreign Ministry also noted that there will be many other decisions at the summit – a new multi-year plan to support Ukraine is being prepared, security guarantees for Ukraine are being discussed, improving cooperation mechanisms with NATO, but the main issue remains the issue of membership.
The media previously reported that the United States, Germany and Hungary were against the creation of a “road map” for Ukraine’s accession to NATO at the July summit.
Recall that in September 2022, Ukraine applied for membership in NATO and it is expected that at the summit in Vilnius it will receive new assurances about joining the Alliance.
