European societies, surprised by this aggression, suddenly saw the return of the threat that they thought had been banished from their territory for good: war. But not in Finland.
For this Scandinavian country, wrongly associated with Scandinavia, this invasion was neither a surprise nor a manifestation of the ghosts of a past that was thought to be invented. While the rest of the continent celebrated a summer of nearly eighty years of peace, disbanded its regular armies and concentrated on operations far abroad, Finland experienced what others seemed to have forgotten: winter always comes back.
