Men in Latvia between the ages of 18 and 27 will be liable for military service and must serve in the army for 11 months.
The Saeima of Latvia on Wednesday, April 5, adopted in the final reading the law on the restoration of military service, which was abolished in 2004, according to Delfi.
By law, men can be called up for military service within one year after they reach the age of 18. Military service lasts 11 months.
In addition, men and women between the ages of 18 and 27 may apply for voluntary service.
Graduates of military academies are exempt from compulsory service, for health reasons or for family reasons; Latvians permanently residing abroad will also not be subject to conscription.
The call will take place twice a year – on January 1 and July 1. It is possible to choose four service options: general military service; national guard service 20 days a year for five years; university unit commander course; alternative military service.
The first conscription in Latvia will start on July 1, 2023, within its framework it is planned to recruit 300 conscripts. In the next seven years, the plan is to increase the total personnel of the Armed Forces to 51,000 military personnel through conscription.
Compulsory conscription in Latvia was abolished in 2004, before the country joined NATO. In the summer of 2022, the Latvian Ministry of Defense made a proposal to restore compulsory military service.
It will be remembered that on April 3, Belarus began to evaluate the combat readiness of the Armed Forces.
