Scientists say the atmospheric phenomenon was caused by an electromagnetic pulse from a nearby storm
A large red ring appeared in the sky over Italy. It looked like an alien “flying saucer” disc. The phenomenon lasted only a fraction of a second, but they managed to capture it on camera, writes Live Science.
The photo of the ring was accidentally taken by Italian photographer Walter Binotto. He saw him in the sky above the city of Possagno.
Binotto often photographs atmospheric phenomena. But it was, he said, one of the largest structures he had ever seen.
The ring has a diameter of about 360 km.
“It is the emission of light and very low frequency disturbances due to sources of electromagnetic impulses. They are usually called ELVE (it is an acronym for the name of the phenomenon in English). This phenomenon is a rare type of atmospheric disturbance that occurs. as a result of a strong electrification of a thunderstorm. This phenomenon in his The queue is called a sprite, and in fact it is a special red lightning,” said the scientists.
It was also noticed that when electromagnetic pulses released by lightning enter the Earth’s ionosphere at a height of 80 to 644 km above the surface. They were first discovered 33 years ago.
