A Chinese app used children’s personal data without parental consent, the UK’s data protection agency said.
TikTok has to pay £12.7m ($15.88m) for multiple breaches of data protection law. We are talking about the use of personal data of children under the age of 13 without parental consent. The said fine was imposed on the Chinese service by the British data protection service, according to The Independent.
TikTok has not received parental consent from around 1.4 million UK children under the age of 13 using the platform, according to the UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).
“There are laws in place to ensure that our children are as safe in the digital world as they are in the physical world. TikTok did not follow these laws. As a result, approximately one million children under the age of 13 who gained access to the platform, and collected TikTok used their personal data,” said ICO CEO John Edwards.
The Office also noted that TikTok did not do enough to verify who was using their platform and did not take sufficient action to close access to minors.
It can be recalled that UK authorities have officially banned officials from using TikTok on work phones. The ban will affect ministers and civil servants.
